EARLY NEW JERSEY PICTORIAL LETTER SHEETS

Edited by Jean Walton

Attractive illustrated letter sheets from the 1800s are highly collectable and not often seen. Some of the most well-known depicted California mining scenes during the Gold Rush days, or were illustrated sheets used during the Civil War. The earliest, before the use of envelopes, were used as folded letter sheets, and would normally have an attached blank sheet for additional writing space.

TREASURE ISLAND, NJ – A BOY SCOUT CAMP POST OFFICE

by Bennett D. Kitts, Don Ross, Lawrence Clay & Fred Bok

Not long ago an article appeared in the Scouts on Stamps journal (SOSSI) which Gene Fricks brought to our attention – “Treasure Island Continued,” by Bennett D. Kitts.1 It explored the history of this summer post office which existed on a Scout Reservation on Treasure Island, a New Jersey island in the Delaware River below Frenchtown, accessible only by boat.

NEW JERSEY-BUILT: 13 FAST AIRCRAFT CARRIERS THAT SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY BETWEEN 1927 AND 2009

by Captain Lawrence B. Brennan, JAGC, USN (Ret.)

This is the final entry in a series of articles begun in the summer issue of NJPH, Aug. 2008, Vol. 33, No. 3, Whole No. 171 and continued in the November 2008 (Whole No. 172) and the February, May, August & November 2009 (Whole Nos. 173 – 176) issues. Because of the length of service of Kitty Hawk, we have found it necessary to subdivide Part VI into parts A & B – through Viet Nam and after Viet Nam.

APOs ~ VIETNAM/NEW JERSEY CORRESPONDENCE

by Jim Walker

This article takes a very limited look at the operation of the APO during the Vietnam War. As can be seen, all mail is to or from New Jersey addresses. All but one of the outgoing covers make use of the free franking privilege for military personnel serving in a combat zone which included most of Southeast Asia.

GRAF ZEPPELIN (LZ-127) MAIDEN FLIGHT COVER

by John Trosky

The Graf Zeppelin was built in Friedrichshafen, Germany and first flew on September 15, 1928. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Hugo Eckener, head of Luftshiffbau Zeppelin, commanded the mighty airship on its first intercontinental passenger flight from Germany to the USA, departing on October 11, 1928 and arriving at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station only four days later after flybys of Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD and New York City.
